Our Care & Community Placements in Moldova
Although not as well publicised as the fate of orphans in Romania, many of the same problems are also suffered by children in neighbouring Moldova. Many families cannot afford to look after their own children so they go into orphanages.
We work with a number of orphanages in and around Chisinau. Volunteers are able to help the local staff who have too much to do. There are opportunities to work with a range of age groups. You can help out with young babies keeping them occupied and entertained. With older children you are required to play games, help with homework or even teach them some English.
We also have various placements working in disabled centres based in Chisinau. You can help by playing with the younger children and helping to teach them basic English. There are opportunities to work with a team of young and enthusiastic staff members eager to have your assistance. They arrange trips away from the centre for the children as well as camps held over the summer.
Another placement keen to welcome volunteers is located in the suburbs of Chisinau to promote the integration of African children living in the city with Moldovan children. The centre, although basic, is a great place to get involved with. You could organise a football match, arrange art classes or teach basic computer skills.
The thing all the care placements have in common is that they are designed to help children who have precious few other people to whom they can turn. This work can be challenging, but it is also fun and enjoyable, and greatly appreciated by the children and staff. Probably the greatest value of a volunteer is to bring some fun into the lives of these children. Simply by being there, playing games, showing affection and providing some much needed love and attention you will be making an important contribution.
